DP12 is as essential as any Dead can be, just for the China>Rider alone, let alone the Spanish Jam and the out-of-nowhere jam from the 28th on top of that.
But personally, I think #7 (from 9/74) and #31 (from 8/74) are also magical sets that can be played over, and over, and over.
DP19 (from 10/19/73) does have a nice disc 3; but many of the shows from Nov/Dec (especially the outstanding DP14) seem stronger to me. (I think Latvala said he would've liked to release lots of shows just from fall '73, but was overruled.)

DP18 is the absolute best that 1978 has to offer. Nothing else from that year comes close. (Well, maybe 1-22.)

And, well, there are a half-dozen DP's from '68-72 that are must-haves for anybody who likes the Dead, but I'm sure you didn't ask about those years since you have them all already! Nonetheless:
#22 (from 2/68) is like an Alternate Anthem, and probably as close to a definitive release from this tour as we'll get.
#16 (11/8/69) is a psychedelic carpet-ride and one of the most remarkable shows of the year. But #26 is also a very intense set that shows how strong they were in April '69.
#4 (2/70) has many fans; but if I could have only one Dead show, #8 (5/2/70) would be it.
#2 (10/31/71) is uneven, but has one of the happiest Dark Stars and Jerry's best-ever Not Fade Away solo!
#36 (9/21/72) was the last DP - it should have been the first. (Latvala, for some reason, released two other shows from the same week first.)

And it goes without saying that you already have all the DPs from '77, especially #3 & 29 from May? (I don't think the '76 picks were the best choices from that year.)
OK, sorry to bore you, be happy with your one pick!

lia,

Could you give me a quick review of DP36.

I have the Birdsong, Bigg RR, Playin, Dark Star, Dew, GDTRFB, He's Gone (9/3), and TOO (9/3). Do I really need the rest, or should I move on to others?

Sounds like you have most of the highlights of this set, so unless you're a complete-show completist, I think it's safe to move on to other picks -

Just what I wanted to hear my friend. Thanks.

I just finished DP12, which was excellent imo, and will check out the other two 74 DP's you mention. I have 24, would characterize it as good but not great.

Cheers.

May I make the case that you should reconsider adding DP #10 to your final list?

This 12/29/77 show is one of the greatest Dead performances ever.

Among the many many highlights are what I feel is the most intense, rock n roll letter-perfect NFA they ever did...the year's ONLY China>Rider (and it's killer), a can't miss first set, and a wonderful Playin' complete with reprise.

This show indicates perfectly how well the band always played at Winterland, and is the best night of that year-ending run.

(All that being said, DP #12 would be my 2nd choice--as noted above--if only for the Space>China>MLBJam>Rider sequence, which is beyond words to describe.)

I have both DP18 and the 1-22 show and I consider myself a 1978 connoisseur, however I contend that 4-12-78 is better than DP18
